First Place in Supporting Clean Indoor Air-HCSIA Walk
Team Blackdems won first place for having the largest team of volunteers in the Houston Communities for Safe Indoor Air "Take It Outside" 3k Walk for a Smoke Free Houston on Saturday June 3. Our participation helped increase awareness on the dangers of second-hand smoke with the purpose of encouraging City Council to pass a full smoking ban in public buildings in Houston. Council is scheduled to review this issue in September.

Medicare Plan D Presentation at Pleasantville Super Neighborhood
 On May 2, 2006 Vice Chair Alysia Minor and member Marcia Miller presented on the advantages, disadvantages, and options available regarding Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, as well as legislative action that should be considered to make future changes more beneficial to working class seniors.

Blackdems served on the host committee for the All Star Weekend fundraiser for Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford.
   
Vet's Speak Forum
Blackdems and The University of Houston's Office of Veterans' Affairs hosted Vet's Speak, a panel discussion and forum that featured some of Houston's top experts on Veteran's issues discussing everything from VA benefits to the current war and how legislative action can be taken to benefit those who sacrificed for our country.

Chairman Robertson Addresses Young Leaders of Jack & Jill
Robertson discusses civil rights, and the four little girls who were murdered in the 1963 Birmingham church bombing in relation to the need for today's adolescents to commit to and prepare for leadership.  This speech was part of the Jack and Jill, Inc. of Greater Houston inaugural ceremony.
 
 
Blackdems Leaders Facilitate Workshop at TSU
Blackdems-TSU Director Aisha Savoy and Vice Chair Alysia Minor facilitated a discussion on environmental justice, and it's implications in Houston at Texas Southern University's Student Leadership Conference.
 
   
Art for Life's Sake HIV Education Be
Vice Chair Alysia Minor served as founder and Host Committee Chair of Art for Life's Sake which raised funds and awarness for HIV education in the high-risk African American community.  The evening featured dozens of artists from throughout the U.S. and some of Houston's top poets and musicians.  HIV testing was also adminstered.
