Blackdems
Contribute to Borris Miles’ Primary Election Victory
Feat Signifies Desire for Change in Texas District
146
HOUSTON (April 12, 2006) – Blackdems,
Houston’s largest African American political organization,
enthusiastically celebrates the unambiguous victory of candidate
Borris Miles in yesterday’s Democratic primary runoff race.
The organization supported Miles’, not only
in lending their namesake to his long list of endorsements, but
in being instrumental behind the scenes. In addition to the Blackdems’
established “Get Out the Vote” crusade, Blackdems contributed
more than 500 volunteer hours toward campaign strategic planning
and operations. This included supervising field operations, collaborating
in finance and fundraising activities, and staffing Miles’
campaign headquarters.
“Blackdems felt the pulse of the community,
and it was clear African Americans in District 146 sought change,”
said Chairman James Robertson, Jr. “Our communities deserve
present and connected leadership that will commit to working in
their best interest. We are pleased to have helped deliver the change
voters in 146 desired. ”
One of the Blackdems’ primary objectives for
the 2005-2008 political season includes conducting effective grassroots
campaigning to produce and support political leaders that share
the values of its citizenry.
Founded in February 2005, Blackdems of Houston motivates
citizens to utilize political action to address challenges facing
their communities. The alliance is widely known for organizing a
variety of community activities to engage African Americans in community
activism including veteran’s day forums, HIV/AIDS fundraisers,
and super neighborhood political forums. The group’s membership
has swiftly grown to over 170 strong, and its news network currently
reaches more than 2,000 citizens monthly. Officers are: James Robertson,
Jr., Chairman; Alysia Minor, Vice Chairman; Lenard Polk, Treasurer;
and Terrance Shanks, Parliamentarian.
Blackdems invites the Houston community to get involved.
